Milan’s Data Center Capacity Set to Surge Tenfold Amid AI Boom
Milan is emerging as Europe's next major data center hub, with capacity projected to expand from 200 megawatts to 2 gigawatts within five years. The exponential growth—driven by artificial intelligence adoption and data processing demands—positions Italian utility A2A as a key beneficiary.
"The electricity requirements of these AI-driven facilities will fundamentally reshape our revenue streams," said A2A CEO Renato Mazzoncini during a Milan industry event. Current data center consumption represents just 13% of the city's peak 1.5GW power demand, leaving substantial room for infrastructure expansion.
Lombardy's largest energy provider stands to gain from the infrastructure Gold rush, with hyperscalers and AI firms competing for reliable power access. The tenfold capacity increase mirrors global trends of compute-intensive technologies outpacing traditional energy planning frameworks.
